Sawyer (Torey Hope: The Later Years)

1

A.D. Ellis granted me an advance copy via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

I had a lot of hope for Sawyer.  The blurb seemed compelling.  Two young adults, struggling with their sexuality, compelled by family obligation to act against their truths- what’s not to like?

Both the main characters and the secondary characters are good people.  Some of the other characters in the story are not quite so nice.  The good people very quickly win out over the not nice people.  The characters are written in such a way that I felt as if we were all in a counseling session and everyone knew just what to say, and how to correct their negative thinking.  Everything was sweet, but nothing was very gripping.  Some of the backstory was revealed, which was a bit interesting, especially since I haven’t read the original series or other books in this series.

This book comes with an 18+ warning, but it’s so mild that I think that warning is misplaced.  The most innocent of readers, or those who shy away from m/m, might find offense at some of the sex scenes, but it’s not more than one would find in upper level YA books.

Recommendation?  If you’re looking for a sweet introduction to m/m, where the people are whole and there’s not a lot of angst, then this book’s for you.  But, if you like a bit more depth, some tension and conflict, and the nitty-gritty of sex, you’re not going to find it here.  For mature YA, I give it three stars.  For adult romance, I give it two stars.
